The rail ways were initially built by the British way back in 1864. It was then referred to as the Ceylon Government Railway, and today is known as the Sri Lanka Railways. The track standards have not been upgraded over the last few decades which has resulted in the train services being restricted to a mere 50mph.

Although relatively run down and mainly used as commuter transportation, many tourists have requested the occasional train journey to be added into their Sri Lankan experience. It is without a doubt, that the rail tracks in Srilanka run through some of the most scenic terrains to be experienced.
